Online conversation – The dos and don’ts

Online conversation can be great fun, especially when it’s with someone new. But now that you’ve found someone to communicate with, don’t ruin your chances of progressing to the next levels by saying, doing the wrong things.

Here are some basic dos and don’ts of online conversation for dating sites or any other similar format:

Online conversation dos

  • When addressing your new contact, use their name as opposed to other terms.
  • Write unique messages so that there’s a personal feel to the conversation.
  • Mention or quote something that you saw on their profile to show that you’ve gone out your way to show interest in them.
  • Be sure to ask questions, again demonstrating an interest.
  • Be yourself. Let your personality be evident through your words.
  • Try and be funny. Humour goes a long way.
  • Keep your online conversation sentences reasonably short.
  • Keep the conversation about positive topics so that you can both look back with fondness.

Online conversation don’ts

  • Very importantly, don’t reveal any personal information about yourself that could cause you danger.
  • Avoid using cliches. People hear these all the time and there’s nothing advantageous about them.
  • Try not to use informal greetings such as “hey”.
  • Don’t be negative or bring up negative topics. This will kill the vibe and nobody wants to hear negative things, especially on a first chat.
  • Don’t use poor grammar and spelling. Being complacent with this small detail can be detrimental.
  • Don’t offer or sell sex.
  • Avoid mentioning an ex at all costs. They won’t be interested in hearing about your previous relationship failures.
  • Try not to become emotionally attached too quickly over instant message as it could scare them away.
  • Don’t discuss controversial topics or anything that you might get over passionate about or come across aggressive towards.

Online conversation examples

  • Tell me something about you that I haven’t already seen on your profile.
  • Describe your ideal partner to me.
  • What’s your biggest turn on/turn off in someone?
  • What makes you laugh?
  • Is there something in particular you’re most passionate about?
  • What are you most excited about in your life right now?
  • What’s your favourite type of music?
